What is Reflexology ?

Clinical Reflexology should not be mistaken for a general foot massage. The ancient art of Reflexology is both a complementary therapy and an exact science, treating a person as a whole rather than working on and suppressing a symptom. Reflexology is an ideal preventative therapy, with regular treatments it can help to keep your mind, body and spirit in complete harmony.

With the left foot representing the left side of the body and the right foot the right side of the body, the areas in the foot form a map resembling the anatomical layout of the body. By having the entire body represented in the feet, Reflexology offers us a means of working with the body holistically.

FACT Did you know 6 of the 12 major Meridians run into the feet ? Reflexology is one of the most established, well respected and effective non-invasive complementary health treatments available

Reflexology offers you many accumulative benefits it can also help with fertility issues, boost immune function, aid deep healing relaxation, reduce unpleasant physical symptoms, improve mood leaving you with a sense of well being.

What does a Reflexology treatment involve ?

Your initial session will begin with a complimentary consultation and reviewing your lifestyle choices. Then, all you need to do is remove your footwear, recline on a therapy couch and relax, you'll be covered with a blanket for your comfort.

The treatment begins by cleansing the feet and then warming up the structures of the feet, loosening muscles and tendons and preparing the feet for this pleasant pressure therapy.

The reflex areas in the feet are then worked through using precise thumb and finger movements. The pressure applied during a Reflexology treatment varies it can be firm, but is never uncomfortable. This normally indicates the reflex areas which are unbalanced. Many clients say a Reflexology treatment is deeply relaxing and a very pleasant experience.

How does Reflexology work ?

Reflexology induces a very deep and pleasant state of relaxation. Your Therapist is able to detect areas of imbalance in the body with their fingers and thumbs. By working these and other corresponding areas, the flow of energy is restored, blood supply to the entire body improves, whilst rebalancing the body's systems and promoting the correct functioning of nerve impulses. This restores homeostasis to the mind, body and spirit.

How long is a Reflexology Treatment ?

A normal treatment will normally last for 1 hour with a complimentary consultation and aftercare advice. In some cases a course of treatments may be advised to resolve any long standing issues. Some Clients choose to book regular monthly treatments as a preventative measure to keep their systems balanced, in good working order and to benefit from the deep relaxation experienced from Reflexology.

 A brief History of Reflexology

Reflexology is a very ancient practice which has its roots in Egypt dating as far back as 2330BC. The tomb of Ankmahor, a respected physician, was discovered in Egypt in 1897 showing cave paintings of what appears to be one person manipulating the hands and feet of another person.

In 1913 Dr. William Fitzgerald, an E.N.T. Doctor, introduced this therapy to the West as Zone therapy. It was in the 1930's that Eunice Ingram, a physiotherapist, developed this theory into what is now known as Reflexology. It was Doreen Bayly who brought Reflexology to Britain in 1966. Reflexology continues to progress and develop.
